Bad News Will Not Break a Fixed Heart

“He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.” Psalms 112:7 (KJV)

I am sure that a lot of us are familiar with the idiom: “No news is good news.” The meaning of the phrase is that if you don’t hear that something bad has happened, it is probably because nothing bad has happened. But did you ever wonder where this idiom came from or when it was first introduced into our vernacular?

This expression is believed to have originated with King James I of England, who said, “No news is better than evil news in the year 1616.” However, what happens in our hearts when we are walloped with a breath-stealing storm of news?  No one wants to wrap themselves in the robe of Job. As you may recall, Job was hit with a maelstrom of misfortunate news (Job 1:13-22)! In the King James version of this passage, you will discover that there is a repetitive phrase that was mentioned three consecutive times which speaks to how fast and furious the bad news flowed: “While he was yet speaking.”

Now I recognize that as pieces of clay (human beings), all of us will bend to bad news and many of us will even break. But I submit to you that there is an answer for adversity and when the news is not good there is a good God that will give you a good grip on your heart. Consider with me the hope that the Word of God declares to the hurting and to those who were held hostage by heartbreak as a result of hearing horrific and hard news.

“But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.” Psalms 5:11 (KJV, emphasis added)

“Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.” Psalm 16:1 (KJV, emphasis added)

“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” Psalm 18:2 (KJV, emphasis added)

Our introductory text reminds us that when we fix our heart in faith and tie our souls together by trusting God we will not have to be floored by fear of bad news.

When the menace of misfortunate news moves to assault our hearts with fear, we must immediately tie our souls by trusting our Savior God and Lord Jesus Christ.
