The Baby Jesus is our WONDER-BREAD

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Are you familiar with the idiom? This is the best thing since sliced bread! This idiomatic expression is usually employed when someone wants to describe something extraordinarily exciting or excellent.

As a young boy growing up in the decade of the ’60s (yeah, I know I just told you my age and I sometimes color my gray crown) the staple three white sliced bread brands in our day were Colonial, Sunbeam, and Wonder bread. Although Wonder Bread was not the country's first manufacturer of sliced, white bread, it's the brand most connected with it.

When the citizens of Indianapolis' attention was arrested by the announcement “the coming of "wonder" in an ad released in May 1921, no one expected Wonder Bread to become an incredibly popular food product that would take the nation by storm and thereby find a place on the tables and in kitchen cabinets throughout America.

Now as we consider our opening scripture reference, the text reveals the utmost and unparallel wonder that the world will ever know and that is the birth of a baby boy called (Immanuel) – GOD INCARNATE. Jesus is called wonderful! The divine descriptive term Wonderful denotes the Messiah would be “wonderful” in his nature as God-Man. And I submit to you a man of miracles!

When we examine the word of God you will discover that Jesus(wonderful) expressed His wonderfulness in numerous ways when He was on the earth, commencing with His conception in the womb of a virgin.

Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

He demonstrated how wonderful He is with his authority to heal.

Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

His incredible teaching was wrapped in wonderfulness. Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

His wonderfulness is attributed to his absolute flawless and sin free life: Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

His victory over the grave elevates his wonderfulness. (His bodily resurrection) Matthew 28:5-6 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Isn’t He wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

Isn’t Jesus my Lord wonderful

Eyes have seen, ears have heard

It’s recorded in God’s Word

Isn’t Jesus my Lord wonderful

Not a sermon, just some thoughts.

For the Glory of God,
