The Greatness of the God-Child

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

This passage of Scripture (Isaiah 9:6) is believed to be one of the most well-known Old Testament prophecies about our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. So, since we are in the Christmas season (which will lead to many of us wrapping and unwrapping presents), let’s unwrap this passage which points us to a paramount present from God.

Isaiah tells us that a child will be born for us. Our initial look at this text should turn our hearts and minds to a door of discovery. So, as we grasp this doorknob, we turn it with the following questions: Who is this child, and does he have a name? Why will this child be any different than any other child? Why do we need this child given to us? To forward the answers for faith-based inquiry, I invite you to consider with me the following quintessential qualities of the God-Child:

C- Characteristics

H- Headship

I- Identity

L- Longevity

D- Davidic Connection

Characteristics: The Child’s characteristics are both natural and supernatural. While the baby boy was born naturally as a human being, He was also conceived supernaturally or spiritually.

“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35 (KJV)

The Bible tells us that He is fully the God-Child.

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Matthew 1:23 (KJV)

Headship: The Child’s headship is demonstrated by absolute authority. He will rule over God’s people according to the Word of God. The establishment of His government and peace is eternal.

“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” Micah 5:2 (KJV)

“And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.” Zechariah 14:9 (KJV)

Identity: The Child will be identified as God among us. He is the absolute embodiment and expression of the following divine designations recorded in Isaiah 9:6: Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

Longevity: The Child’s longevity is perpetual.

According to Isaiah 9:6, He will live forever. The Bible also tells us that He will rule forever.

“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” Isaiah 9:7 (KJV)

He will reward faith with eternal forgiveness.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12 (KJV)

“I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” Isaiah 43:25 (KJV)

Finally, He will give us life that will last forever.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (KJV)

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24 (KJV)

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13 (KJV)

Davidic Connection: The Child’s rule will fulfill a Davidic prophecy.

God our Father promised David that his dynasty and rule would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16). This Prophecy is exactly fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:32–33 (KJV)

May these season’s greetings grip your mind and heart with the greatness and goodness of the God-Child.

For the Glory of God,
