In Sync With God’s Sovereignty
“Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.” Psalm 145:7 (KJV)
One evening I was having a bite to eat with my wife and my daughter-in-love and we were having a conversation about exercise/smart watches. These smart watches (with no diploma or degree) will make it their objective to track your daily activity which includes monitoring an individual’s number of steps, calories burned, sleep patterns, stress and recovery. Although we call it a “smart watch”, the watch needs assistance in accessing data. Therefore, it has to be paired or synced to your phone or another mobile device.
I find it interesting that the word “sync” is defined as “in harmony or a harmonious relationship.” Therefore, consider with me the Christian concept of consistently syncing to the Sovereignty of God in order to encourage devotion to God and shut out disharmony. When my smart watch is out of sync, it’s capacity to accurately account my activity is arrested. Likewise, when we are not in sync with the sovereignty of our God and Savior, we inaccurately account for God’s will and purposes in our lives!
What do we mean when we say that God is sovereign? The sovereignty of God is the sound biblical doctrine that advances the absolute truth that God is the supreme authority. All things are under His control. Sovereignty is a colossal characteristic of God that is based upon the infallible and forceful fact that God is the creator of heaven and earth and enjoys the absolute right and full authority to do or allow whatever He wills or wants. I think of the lyrics of the gospel song “He’s God” by Fred Hammond:
Ruler of earth and sky
And everything there is
He is crowned most high
His kingdom never ends
I remind myself every now and then
He is God
That’s just the way it is
He don’t need you
He don’t need me
All together He don’t need them
He is God all by Himself
That’s just the way it is
What does scripture say?
“For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.” Psalm 135:5-6 (KJV)
“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.” Isaiah 46:10 (KJV)
When we are in sync with the truth that God is in control it liberates us from the lies and the devilish distortions that come from our deceptive hearts. It frees us from fear and moves us to faith! We can then process the inevitable encroachment of pain with peace and replace despair with deliverance!
