The Pit Of Porn
“For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.” Proverbs 23:27 (KJV, emphasis mine)
We are undoubtedly living in an unprecedented period. Pornographic pictures and explicit erotic material are more assessable than at any other time in history. Case in point, consider the illicit images that are insidiously in our faces in shopping malls at stores such as Victoria’s Secret, advertisements on the road, internet, television and movies, fliers and magazines, iPhones, iPads and electronic devices. I mean these salacious sources are an enormously large hole of lawlessness and a duplicitous deep ditch!
From a global perspective porn is estimated to generate revenue of $97 billion annually, according to Kassia Wosick, Assistant Professor of Sociology at New Mexico State University. At present, between $10 and $12 billion of that revenue is estimated to come from the United States. I submit to you that the pit of porn is profoundly pervasive and is perpetuated by hearts and minds poisoned by polluted passions.
Since we are children of God (John 1:12), we are called to walk worthy of the Lord who saved us. Our walk reveals who, what and why we worship. Conversely, the world also reveals who, what and why they worship. Read and hear what the Word of God divinely direct all of God’s children to do:
“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.” Ephesians 4:17-19 (KJV, emphasis added)
God’s Word exhorts us not to comply, be captured, conform or conduct oneself according to the world.
When a person participates and thereby falls (oftentimes purposely jumps) into the pit of pornography he or she establishes a partnership with the world – those that do not fear or believe in God. For the child of God, partnership with the world is also tantamount to being a whore, spiritually-speaking. In the Scriptures God’s people participated in whoredom which is indicative of spiritual and physical fornication.
“Thou hast played the whore also with the Assyrians, because thou wast unsatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied.” Ezekiel 16:28 (KJV, emphasis added)
“They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.” Ezekiel 16:33 (KJV, emphasis added)
“Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well favoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.” Nahum 3:4 (KJV, emphasis added)
In our New Testament passage (Ephesians 4:17-19), Paul points to eight principles that are prioritized in the heart and mind of a person trapped in the pit of porn.
Walk = To conduct oneself
Vanity = Perversity and depravity
Darkened = To darken or to be covered with darkness
Blindness = A dull and blunted mind that is difficult to persuade (stubborn)
Given themselves = To deliver oneself or to commit oneself
Lasciviousness = Unbridled or unrestrained lust that is excessive as well as shameless and outrageous
Uncleanness = Living a life that is utterly shamelessly immoral
Greediness = Excessive and insatiable desires
My heart and purpose of this entry is not to embarrass but expose this evil encroachment for what it is. Pornography is eviscerating marriages and families in epidemic proportions. Therefore we must equip and sanctify ourselves in truth.
Join me again next time as we process the problem and the pervasive consequences of falling or jumping into the pit of porn.
