Caught in Consequential Contentment

"The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot." - Psalm 16:5

"Thou art my portion, O LORD." - Psalm 119:57

When a biblical writer, moved by the Holy Spirit, says, "God is my portion," he means that a benevolent God is the source of his bliss and blessings.

Richard Smallwood, an American Gospel music artist, wrote a song where the lyrics superbly promote our prodigious prosperity, which is perfectly encapsulated in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus, you're the center of my joy
All that's good and perfect comes from you
You're the heart of my contentment, hope for all I do
Jesus, you're the center of my joy.

You are everything (Jesus), everything (you are)
Everything (the center) everything (of my joy)
You're my joy (Jesus) in my sorrow (you are)
You're my hope (the center) for tomorrow (of my joy)
When I'm lonely (Jesus), feel inside (you are)
You're the lifter (the center) of my head (of my joy)
You're my music (Jesus), you're my song (you are)
You're my joy (the center) all day long (of my joy)
Woah, Jesus, you're the center of my joy.

The Psalmist declares that he is content with all that the Lord is and provides. He has the most excellent inheritance imaginable and does not pursue any possession or security outside of God. If God is our portion, we need nothing else. Let's see what the scripture has to say about a soul that has secured some consequential contentment.

Psalm 142:5 - "I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living."

Psalm 73:26 - "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever."

Ecclesiastes 5:18 - "Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion."

Declaring that God is your portion is another way of saying that He is your inheritance, your allowance in life. Furthermore, when we say that God is our portion, we are saying that He is our all-sufficient One, who rewards us with a reservoir of resources that will never be depleted.

In closing, when a Christian conveys that the Lord is his or her portion, their soul has been caught in consequential contentment because the allotment of the Almighty has arrested them.

Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
