The Baby Jesus is our WONDER-BREAD 2
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:35
From our last blog entry, I shared how eternity embodied a baby boy thereby being wonderful.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
As I stated in the last entry the baby Jesus’s conception cements us in the truth that the baby Jesus is God and man in one!
In Isaiah 9:6 the prophet gave us divine descriptors that directed us to the baby Jesus’s deity. And the first adjective that describes the All mighty is Wonderful!
In addition, he is (Wonderful) Bread. And in our opening text Jesus tells us who he is (I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE) And according to the word of God Jesus was born in the house of bread (Bethlehem) and declares that he is the bread of life.
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
It’s interesting to think that the extraordinary (supernatural) existed in the ordinary (natural) and identified himself as THE BREAD OF LIFE!
Now I invite you to consider with me what Christ the Lord was declaring about himself.
First, the Lord associated himself with bread. That is, we need bread/food to survive therefore without Jesus you will not strive or stay alive. Second, the life Jesus is describing is not a physical life, but eternal life. Therefore, Jesus is seeking to turn the thoughts of the people from the natural to the supernatural or physical to the spiritual.
He is also distinguishing what He gives as their Messiah with the bread He miraculously provided the previous day. That was physical bread that passes away. He is spiritual bread that will always stay and sustain us forever.
And my final but paramount point is that Our Lord Jesus Christ is making another claim that he is God. There are several “I AM” statements from Jesus in the Gospel of John and this is the first one. From the word of God in the Old testament the phrase “I AM” is called the covenant name of God (Yahweh) unveiled to Moses at the burning bush.
Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. The phrase speaks of HIS self-sufficient existence which is a characteristic that only God can have. It is also a phrase the Jews who were listening would have routinely understood as a statement to deity. Remember in John Chapter 8 of John that wanted to stone our Lord because He called himself “I AM” and thereby calling himself God.
John 8:58-59 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
In closing, I am positive that many of us will be breaking bread over the Holiday’s. I pray that you partake and especially share some WONDER BREAD (JESUS) this Christmas and in the New Year.
Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
For the Glory of God,
