Being Heated by Hostility Toward the Word

“Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.” Psalms 119:53

Have you ever been arrested in your heart and mind (spiritually or emotionally) due to the hostility that the world holds toward the Word of God? If you share that the Word of God perpetually promotes patriarchal leadership in the nuclear family, encourages the exclusivity of matrimony between a man and a woman, supremely supports the sanctity of life, preserves and promotes sexual purity, boldly and unapologetically proclaims that there is only one God, and that Jesus is the only Way to God as well as the Truth and Life: Get ready for an apoplectic assault of accusations by those who belong to their father; the accuser of the brethren!

“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Revelation 12:10 (KJV)

A biblical worldview is almost nonexistent; even among those who confess to be Christians. According to a new study by researcher George Barna and the Cultural Research Center (CRC) at Arizona Christian University in Glendale, Arizona, there are 176 million Americans who claim to be Christians representing 69% of the population. Yet, only 6% of U.S. adults (9% of those identifying as Christians) enjoy and embrace a biblical worldview where they believe the Bible is accurate and reliable.

Our opening text is basically reflecting the psalmist’s heart: I am captured by a combustible tempest because of the ungodly abandonment and rejection of God and His Word.

There are two types of anger revealed in the Word of God: righteous anger and unrighteous anger. Righteous anger reflects a display of indignation for holy reasons. This type of anger is consumed with a passion for righteousness or by a desire to promote our Heavenly Father’s will, reputation, and honor. When the Lord Jesus Christ cleared out the temple, He perfectly presented a righteous and controlled anger (Mark 11:15-18). When God is angry, He has this kind of anger.

“Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.” Proverbs 13:13 (KJV)

I invite you to join me next time as we explore how a holy anger is appropriate for hostile attitudes toward God’s Word.
