Don’t Forget God’s Word - Part Two

“I will not forget thy word.” Psalms 119:6b (KJV)

In last week’s blog, we were emphatically encouraged to not be in the habit of forgetting God’s Word. As we continue this thought, consider with me this sobering admonition and the colossal consequences when a people forget or abandon God and His Word.

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Psalms 9:17 (KJV)

“Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.” Deuteronomy 8:11-14 (KJV)

We now will endeavor to be proactive in the prevention of not forgetting God’s Word. Let us consider some incentives and instruction.

INCENTIVES

I will not forget His Word because of the immeasurable life altering blessings.

1. Life, relationship, and salvation

“Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction. I will never forget thy precepts:for with them thou hast quickened me. I am thine, save me;for I have sought thy precepts.” Psalms 119:92-94 (KJV, emphasis added)

2. Provision and protection

“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” Psalm 91:2-4 (KJV, emphasis added)

“But he answered and said, It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 (KJV, emphasis added)

INSTRUCTIONS

Therefore, the blessings of God’s Word should lead us to make a deliberate decision to delight and take pleasure in God’s Word. When we deeply and richly enjoy something, we have no problem remembering it. Delighting in God’s Word is essential for the prevention of biblical memory lost.

What happens when we forget and abandon God’s Word?

  • We minimize and disrespect God.

  • We forget who God is.

  • We replace God with idols.

  • We embrace the council of the ungodly.

  • We will give the devil a foothold in our hearts.

  • We are unable to destroy strongholds.

  • We willingly walk with the world.

  • We abandon the call of sharing the Gospel.

  • We faint in trials and troubles.

  • We call evil good and good evil.

  • We exchange the truth of God for lies.

Now I invite you to process with me: What causes us to forget God’s Word?

  • Anger, ambition, apathy

  • Bitterness, blessings

  • Carnality, culture, conflict

  • Desires, disappointment, despair

  • Ego, entertainment, experiences

  • Fear, failure, finances

  • Grief, gifts, glory

  • Hardships, habits, hostility

  • Indifference, idolatry

  • Jaded, joylessness

In closing, let us commit to not forgetting God’s Word. Let us not fall into the trap of hiding His Word in our hearts incorrectly by forgetting where it is and its immeasurable impact in our lives.
