The Significance Of Being Stuck To Scripture

“I have stuck unto thy testimonies” Psalm 119:31a (KJV)

Have you ever been stuck? Strapped, Tided, United, Connected or Knitted to a person place or thing. How did you set yourself to be stuck? This rhetorical question requires some reflection. However, it is plausible that the position of being stuck is pertinent to the set of circumstances or situations that one may find him or herself in. For example, one’s automobile may be stuck in the mud. Or one can be stuck in a job (desirable or undesirable), stuck in a relationship (pleasurable or unpleasant) or stuck and caught in a conundrum. Regardless of situation, I submit to you that being stuck can be a willful decision and declaration.

Consider with me two observations from our text. In our text, we have a declaration and a revelation. The writer made a declaration: “I have stuck unto thy testimonies.” The word stuck means to cling, stick, stay close, cleave, keep close, or stick to. In Deuteronomy 4:3–4, Moses referred to the incident at Baal Peor in Moab to illustrate from the Israelites’ own history that their very lives depended on them obeying and cleaving to God’s commandments. At Baal of Peor, all the Israelites who encouraged or embraced spiritual and physical adultery with the Moabite women were either slain by the sword or died in a plague. However, those who stuck and locked on to the Lord lived.

Following the writer’s declaration in Psalm 119:31, we see a revelation. When we make a personal decision to cling and stay close to God’s Word it reveals one’s heart and mind. For the most, part we purpose to cling to what we believe is true. And as believers we know that God’s Word is true:

“Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.” Psalm 119:60 (KJV)

“Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.” Psalm 119:42 (KJV)

The Psalmist reveals that he is clinging to the commandments and sticking to God’s statutes because he knows that they are true. The following acrostic captures why he clings to the God’s Word:

  • Trust: He chose to trust in God’s Word.

  • Revere: He chose to revere God’s Word.

  • Under: He chose to place Himself under the authority of God’s Word.

  • Experience: He experienced the power of God’s Word in his life.

When we believe that God’s Word is true, we will experience in our relationship with God: regeneration, righteousness, reception, rescue, redemption, restoration, rapport, remembrance, relationship, reproof, rebuke, rejection and refrain from sinful behavior, rediscovery, reason, and reconciliation.

So, what are some experiences that cause Christians to cling to God’s Word? Suffering, loss, rejection, hopelessness, confusion, being wounded, fear, loneliness and even prosperity. In closing, when we cling and set our souls to be stuck to God’s Word, you will not cling to the world or be stuck to the world.
