What Child is This
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matthew 16:16
According to Galaxy Music Notes: “What Child Is This?” is a famous and traditional Christmas carol created in 1865. The lyrics were composed by William Chatterton Dix, the son of a surgeon residing in Bristol, England. William spent most of his life as a businessman in Glasgow, Scotland, working at the managerial level of the Maritime Insurance Company.
In 1865, William was 29 years old when he experienced a Life-threatening trial of illness. In addition, he was suffering with severe depression, and this near-death experience changed him completely. While enduring recovery, he experienced a spiritual awakening that stirred him to start producing profound pieces of hymns. He also turned into an ardent reader of the Bible, and subsequently wrote the lyrics to the captivating Christmas Carol “What Child Is This” In his song Mr. Dix highlighted some transcending characteristics to answer the question about a Child that was born and will never again be born.
The Word of God floods our soul with some sanctified, spectacular and spiritual aspects that answers the question regarding who the Child is. So, for the purpose of securing a sound and spirit filled Holiday season here is a tool to turn our hearts toward the child of Christmas, Jesus.
(Five points to cement or consciences in the Child of Christmas).
Christ (Matthew 1:18 16:16)
Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Christ is a word that means “the anointed one” or “the chosen one” It is derived from the Greek word “Christos” and the Hebrew word “Yeshua Hamashiach” Christ is the Messiah and Savior, the Son of God who came to save humanity from sin and death.
Holy (Luke 1:35)
That “holy thing” emphasizes His divine nature and purity, indicating that He would be the Son of God and set apart for a sacred purpose. This signifies the miraculous and divine source of Jesus, accentuating His role as the Anointed One and Messiah.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore, also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Incarnation (Isaiah 9:6; John 1:14; 1 Timothy 3:16)
The term "incarnation" refers to the Christian colossal conviction that a divine being took on human form. AND WE PROCLAIM AND BELIEVE THAT God became human in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus is believed to be both fully God and fully human.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Lord (Matthew 28:18)
The statement “Jesus is Lord” means Jesus has “all authority in heaven and on earth.” In saying, “Jesus is Lord,” we commit ourselves to obey Him. The Word of God reminds us of our Lord’s words relating to personal obedience and subjection to His Lordship. Jesus asked, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46).
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Deliverer (Psalm 40:17 and Matthew 1:21)
Psalm 40:17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Jesus is called the Deliverer because He rescues all from the bondage of death and the repentant from the penalties of sin. The Messiah (Jesus) was sent by God to be the Deliverer and King of His people In the New Testament, and Jesus is portrayed BY HAVING THE POWER TO DELIVER people from various VICES and forms of bondage. (physical, spiritual, or emotional).
So, let’s remember the Child in Christmas is no longer in the manger but is Master of the Universe and our Lives. Wise men still seek Him.
Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
