A Spiritual and Special Seniors Moment, Pt 2
A SPIRITUAL AND SPECIAL SENIORS MOMENT, PART 2
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Luke 1:6
From our last time together, we visited the issue of aging. Growing old has its moments of humor as well as moments that are hard and difficult. But not all senior moments are tied to troubles or connected to the comical. As a matter of fact, there are some Senior moments that are set in moments that are memorable and majestic, and that shine on the stage of supernatural splendor!!
In the first chapter of the Gospel according to Luke we are introduced to a splendid and super couple who happened to be seniors. They were super because of the Spirit of God, and they were fixed in faith and robust in righteousness before God.
Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
The couple’s names were Zechariah and Elizabeth. Zechariah was a Priest, and his wife, Elizabeth, was a descendant of Aaron. It’s important to note that considerable care was conveyed in choosing the wives for Jewish priests. This was done for the purpose of keeping the priestly line in purity and piety. Zechariah was exceptionally respected in receiving a wife from one of the lineages of Aaron.
The priests were divided into twenty-four divisions according to (1 Chron. 24), and each priest served in the temple two weeks out of the year. Despite the great grip of godlessness around them, Zachariah and Elizabeth were trustworthy and maximized their moments by obeying the Word of God and living perfectly in the purposes of God.
The scriptures report that they were indeed seniors, because they were both well advanced along in years. Consequently the hope of having children was only a dream that continued to diminish over their many sunrises and sunsets.
Even though they were exceptionally righteous and God-fearing servants they were not exempt from heartbreak, marital, and family struggles. Trials and tests are tied with us as we travel on this journey.
James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
They were arrested with a personal problem with no answer. But I submit to you that in the belly of brokenness they continued to be a bright beacon of Godliness. When facing problems, faith fixed people persevere in service and prayer. However, they were not remotely cognizant that God would answer their prayers and give them not a priest, but a prophet! And no common prophet, because their son would be the Almighty’s announcer of the coming King!
Stay tuned for next time as I highlight the announcement of an angelic visitor to an extremely surprised and startled senior.
Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
