Petitioning the Proper Parameters for a Relationship with the Lord

Petitioning the Proper Parameters for a Relationship with the Lord

"Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes." —Psalm 119:124

From the beginning, our benevolent Father and God declared the essentiality and blessing of being in a relationship.

Genesis 2:18 – "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."

Ecclesiastes 4:11-12 – "Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

It has been said that relationships enjoy an expected balance of power that portrays the person who leads and the person who follows. In a marital union, the husband or the wife can’t both be the frontrunner when making decisions, even though these decisions are generally ones that both parties approve.

Likewise, the same principle applies to relationship rules. These are the parameters for actions that both parties agree on and follow, which were established in oneness. Subsequently, both parties purpose in their hearts to adhere to what was agreed upon. But it is important to note that it is in the execution of those rules that relational undercurrents are lived out.

For instance, in my marital relationship, I am an early riser, and my spouse sleeps a little later. Hence, as a rule, I purpose to be quieter, and if I turn on a light, to my wife’s delight, I press the dimmer switch. Therefore, the rule applies mainly to me. Again, to observe the rule, I comply by negating any noise while dressing and being diligent to always close the bedroom door when I leave. My wife is asleep as I am abiding by the rule. Although there is mutual agreement, I am the one practicing the principle, but the power is in my wife’s hands.

But as it relates to my relationship with the Lord, He will and must always take the lead because He is Lord of my life.

John 3:30 – "He must increase, but I must decrease."

John 15:5 – "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."

Galatians 2:20 – "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

Join me next time as we turn our focus to personally petitioning the Lord to lead and help us live out our relationship with Him.

Not a sermon, just some thoughts.
