Deliberately Delighting in the Word of God
Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights. Psalm 119:143
When eternity is the backdrop its reasonable to see that the word of God describes and declares our longevity of life as a little book with limited chapters. Scripture also states that our lives are as brief as a momentary mist.
Psalm 90:9b we spend our years as a tale that is told.
James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
And so there will be occasions in the little chapters of our little book as well as moments in our life mist that there will be times when anguish (mental-emotional-spiritual attacks) will arrest you. Life’s excruciating experiences are inevitable.
In our introductory text the Psalmist points us to his practice as well as how he positions himself when he is hurting and held hostage by trouble and anguish.
“yet thy commandments are my delights.” His disposition in duress did not denounce and dismiss the word of God. He deliberately delights in the word of God.
The original Hebrew word translated as “delight” signals “a feeling of extreme pleasure, satisfaction, or joy.” By reading, meditating, studying, and directing God’s truth to one’s life rewards us with a real and rich relationship with God full of bliss and blessings.
Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditates day and night.
Psalm 119:24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.
Psalm 119:174 I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight.
HOW DOES ONE DISCOVER DELIGHT IN THE WORD OF GOD?
Genuine godly and bona-fide born again individuals receive their instruction and direction from the complete counsel of God’s Word. In addition, their relationship with the Word of God should resemble existing in love. Individuals who are in love generally delight in each other. They take the initiative and seek to spend some seriously time together. They sip and eat every word they communicate to each other. When they are apart, they desire to be in each other’s company. This is the powerful portrait of personally engaging and embracing the word of God.
Join me next time as we continue consider the actions that accentuate and advertise that we delight in the word of God.
Not a sermon just some thoughts.
