The Debilitating Drunkenness of Double-Mindedness
The Debilitating Drunkenness of Double-mindedness
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 1:8
At this season in my life, I can say that I have seen a lot of sunrises and sunsets. Although scripture states that our life is as short as a story being told in the backdrop of Eternity (Psalm 90:9), I soundly affirm that all my life God has been faithful and enormously good! Notably when I have traveled through triumphs and trials. And if you live long enough there is no need to track down trouble, because in due time, trouble will find you.
Correspondingly, to collect God’s wisdom in triumphs and trials, a born-again believer must be wise in asking. Foremost, he must ask in faith. He must believe and not doubt the word of God.
Noah Websters 1828 dictionary defines the word doubt as a fluctuation of mind respecting truth or propriety, arising from defect of knowledge or evidence; uncertainty of mind; suspense; unsettled state of opinion; as, to have doubts respecting the theory of the tides.
James the Just aka the brother of the Lord, divinely determined that the doubting individual is “like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind (James 1:6-8). And therefore, a wavering soul should not walk towards God like a wave of the sea, blown and buffeted by the wind. God will consistently display displeasure toward the double minded (a person with two-minds). Because a man or women who is unstable in all his actions, is akin to an uneven drunk smitten with stupor and staggering, specifically with his service and surrender to the Lord.
Our Lord Jesus Christ unequivocally echoed that the one who attempts to serve two masters is “unstable”.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24
In addition, a double-minded person is agitated and jumbled in his thinking, and his movements. Consequently, he or she is chained to conflict within themselves. Undoubtedly any soul united to uncertainty is incapable of inclining themselves towards trusting God and His guaranteed and gracious promises.
Those who are double-minded do not possess the faith, which is essential in pleasing God, spoken of in Hebrews 11:1-6.
If someone is stammering, stumbling and struggling in the drunkenness of double mindedness, they need assistance from my acrostic ally, MR.MAP. That is, he or she must MEMORIZE- READ-MEDITATE-APPLY-PRAY to secure SPIRTUAL SOBRIETY. Because it is the Word of God that generates Godly faith (Romans 10:17). Also it is essential that they embrace and engage in prayer for faith. Our great and generous God is good to those who ask Him. Remember, we have not because we have not.
Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. James 4:2
With faith we can deliver ourselves from the drunkenness of double mindedness and defeat doubting God.
